Ever notice how exhausting other people’s emotions can be in recovery?
You’re not craving a drink. You’re just tired. Tired of the tantrums. Tired of the guilt trips. Tired of the silent treatment. Tired of feeling responsible for everyone else’s mood just to keep the peace.
In Module 4 of The Let Them Theory, we talk about something that quietly derails a lot of people in recovery: relapse by resentment. Not because you want to use — but because you’re burned out from managing emotional chaos that isn’t yours.
In this lesson, we unpack:
What emotional sovereignty really means in recovery
Why prioritizing other people’s comfort over your own sanity leads to burnout
The “Adult Toddler” visualization for dealing with emotional immaturity
Why you don’t negotiate with tantrums — you let them
The science behind emotional reactions and the 90-second wave How riding the wave protects your sobriety
Why “the right decision” often feels wrong — and why that doesn’t mean it is How guilt, people-pleasing, and fear of disappointing others can put recovery at risk
💭 Honest question: Who in your life uses silence, anger, or guilt to control how you feel? The Courage to Surrender | Faith, Recovery & Step One
🔥 Control feels safe… until it destroys us.
For many of us in recovery, the hardest thing we ever did was admit one simple truth:
We were not in control.
In this message from Outreach 419 on March 15, Chaplain Heidi Woldhuis begins a new series exploring the 12 Steps through the lens of Jesus — starting with the foundation of them all:
Step One — the courage to surrender.
Scripture reminds us:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20“Be still and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Whether someone struggles with addiction, anxiety, control, or simply trying to manage life on their own terms, the lesson is the same.
The more we grip tighter, the more life slips away.
Freedom starts when we loosen our grip and trust God with the outcome.
For many people in recovery, surrender isn’t weakness.
It’s the moment everything begins to change.

Stop throwing cinder blocks at people who are already drowning.
We’ve all heard them. Those "Pinterest-worthy" Bible verses that sound great on a coffee mug but actually aren't in the Bible at all. We use these clichés to fill the silence when someone is hurting, but instead of offering a lifeline, we’re often just adding weight to their struggle.
In this Sunday’s message, we broke down three big things people think are in the Word, but aren't:
"God helps those who help themselves." The Truth: This isn't Gospel; it’s actually the opposite. If we could help ourselves, we wouldn't need a Savior. God helps those who can’t help themselves. "God won't give you more than you can handle."
The Truth: Life gives us more than we can handle every single day. The promise isn't that we won't be overwhelmed; it’s that God will be there with us when we are.
The Challenge: Next time you see someone in a mess, instead of tossing out a cliché, try saying: "I’m here to listen. Help me understand so I know how to love you."
The Answer: We don't need catchy phrases; we need community and the real, unpolished grace of God. Come get filled up—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. You don’t have to have it all together to belong here. 9:30 AM: Recovery Church 11:00 AM: Community Lunch (If you're in the Fenwick area, come eat!) 1:00 PM: Meditation Group Treat yourself to a day of connection and renewal. 📍 Location: Outreach 419, Fenwick, MI 🌐 Learn More: outreach419.com 📱 Get the App: Download the Sober Not Boring app for more resources!

🧠 You thought it was a mistake.Heidi says it was a bullet.
We talk about “character defects.”We say “I slipped.”We say “It’s just anxiety.”We say “It’s just depression.”We say “It’s just one drink.”
But what if it’s bigger than that?
In this message from Outreach 419 (March 1, 2026), Chaplain Heidi Woldhuis pulls back the curtain on something most of us don’t talk about enough:
Spiritual warfare is real.
“Don’t treat a bullet like it was a mistake.”“The father of lies uses your own mouth to shoot the bullets.”“God will not stay where you actively welcome darkness.”
Fear.Isolation.Depression.Gossip.Addiction.
What if those aren’t just weaknesses…What if they’re part of a war for your mind?
For those of us in recovery, this hits hard. Because we know what it’s like to believe the lie:“It’s just one.”“It’s too late.”“You’re a fake.”“You’re all alone.”
And we also know what it’s like to fight back.
This message is bold. It’s uncomfortable. It’s not soft. But it’s hope-filled — because the war has already been won.

What if the spotlight you feel in recovery… isn’t real?
In early recovery, the fear of judgment can feel like carrying a heavy backpack everywhere you go. You replay conversations. You assume people are watching. You wonder what they’re thinking. And that pressure alone is enough to push people back toward old patterns.
In Module 3: Overcoming the Fear of Judgment, we unpack why shame feels so powerful in recovery—and how to stop letting other people’s opinions control your choices.
This lesson breaks down:
-The Spotlight Effect and why it keeps people stuck
-How internal shame gets projected onto others
-Why it’s neurologically impossible to control what people think
-Mel Robbins’ truth that judgment exists no matter what you do
-How Let Them releases you from approval-seeking
-How Let Me helps you live in a way that builds self-respect
-Using the Frame of Reference to respond to family fear with compassion instead of defense
-Why making decisions to make others happy is a relapse risk
-How consistency—not arguments—rebuilds trust
💭 Honest question: Where do you notice fear of judgment influencing your recovery choices right now?
This video is part of the FREE Let Them Theory Recovery Course, available inside the Sober Not Boring App, where you’ll also get:
The downloadable Module 3 workbook
-Journaling prompts that help separate fear from facts
-Real-world recovery scenarios you’ll recognize immediately
-Discussion spaces to process this with others in recovery

Stress isn’t just annoying — it’s biological. And in recovery, that matters.
If you’ve ever snapped in traffic, lost it over a long line, or felt that familiar “I need to escape this feeling” urge after a stressful day… this module is for you.
In Module 2 of The Let Them Theory, we go beyond mindset and talk about what’s actually happening in your brain and body when stress hits — and why unmanaged stress is dangerous territory in recovery. This isn’t about “calming down” or “thinking positive.” This is about learning how to manually override your own nervous system when fight-or-flight takes over.
In this lesson, you’ll learn:
Why stress hijacks your rational brain and shuts down good decision-making
How the amygdala and prefrontal cortex impact relapse risk
Why “I just need to take the edge off” is really a stress response
How Let Them acts as a mental brake
How Let Me uses your breath to reset your nervous system
Practical, real-world examples (traffic, planes, work stress, feeling undervalued)
A simple stress audit to find where your energy is leaking
💭 Question for you: What’s one situation lately where stress pushed you closer to impulsive thinking?
This video is part of the FREE Let Them Theory Course, available inside the Sober Not Boring App, where you’ll also get: The downloadable Module 2 handout & workbook
Recovery-specific exercises and journaling prompts

You got sober… so why are you still exhausted?
If you’ve ever felt worn out trying to manage people’s moods, fix family dynamics, control how you’re perceived, or hold everything together just to stay sober — this video is for you.
In Module 1: The Foundation, we unpack a hidden relapse trigger most people never talk about: control. Not substances. Control. This is the moment where recovery shifts from white-knuckling to actually building something sustainable.
In this video, I break down:
Why putting down the substance is only halftime
How control disguises itself as “responsibility” in recovery
Why trying to manage people creates stress, resentment, and relapse risk
How Let Them and Let Me work together as surrender + action
A simple “brake pedal” tool you can use when your chest tightens and your mind spirals
💭 Real question: What would your life look like if you stopped managing everyone else’s reactions to your recovery?
This video is part of the FREE Let Them Theory Course inside the Sober Not Boring App, where you’ll get:

🧠 This isn’t just a conference. It’s a bridge.
Healthy 2 Connections is heading to the Black Men’s Brain Health Conference in person — not to sit in the audience, but to bring back real data, real connections, and real solutions to our local community.
Black men face nearly double the risk of stroke, higher rates of misdiagnosis, and delayed Alzheimer’s detection. That’s not just a statistic — it’s a gap in access, research, and trust. This conference is where national researchers, advocates, and community leaders come together to change that, and we’re making sure Muskegon has a seat at the table.
📡 Can’t travel? Join us virtually — for FREE.Register for the virtual experience and be part of a national movement focused on brain health equity, prevention, research inclusion, and culturally grounded solutions. What we learn there comes straight back here — to youth programs, family education, recovery support, and senior brain health initiatives.
